Membership to the Royal College of Pediatric and Child Health – MRCPCH

The MRCPCH designed to test the skills, knowledge and behavior of pediatricians in training. Membership of the Royal College of Pediatric and Child Health (MRCPCH) is achieved by passing a series of examinations, 3 theoretical examinations and one clinical. MRCPCH examinations are usually taken during the period of basic specialist training, which normally lasts two to three years, and is the normal entry requirement for Core Specialist Training in pediatrics. MRCPch is also highly regarded in many other places in the world including the Middle East, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Singapore.

Eligibility
You must be a graduate of a medical school recognized by the General Medical Council of UK. The three theoretical examinations can be taken in any order. You must pass all three theoretical examinations before qualifying for the clinical examination. You must complete all examinations within a 7 year period.

MRCPch part  1 a: Foundation of Practice FOP Exam
FOP is a one-day exam that is 2.5 hours long. It includes 61 MCQ questions and 14 matching questions designed to assess the candidate's knowledge in basic child health, understanding and clinical decision making abilities, and ensure they have reached the standard of someone entering their core specialist training.
An average performance is determined for each exam and candidates falling above the average score are awarded a pass. The exam is available in Egypt 3 times a year; in February, June and October. The fees are £339 if taken alone and £550 if taken with the TAS exam.

MRCPch part  1 b:Theory and Science TAS Exam
TAS is a one-day exam lasting 2.5 hours. It includes 55 MCQ questions, 14 extended matching and 6 true/false questions. TAS tests the basic scientific, physiological and pharmacological principles upon which clinical practice is based as well as the principles of evidence-based practice.
An average performance is determined for each exam and candidates falling above the average score are awarded a pass. The exam is available in Egypt 3 times a year; in February, June and October. The fees are £339 if taken alone and £550 if taken with the TAS exam.

MRCPch part  2: Applied Knowledge in Practice AKP Exam
AKP is a one-day exam with two papers, each lasting 2.5 hours. They contain a combination of MCQs and extended matching to assess your knowledge synthesis/evaluation, clinical decision making and management.
An average performance is determined for each exam and candidates falling above the average score are awarded a pass. The exam is available in Egypt 3 times a year; in January, May and September. The fees are £639.

MRCPch part  3 Clinical Examination
The clinical examination is a one day OSCE with 10 stations. The stations test the candidate in child development, communication skills, history taking, management planning, recognition and diagnosis of clinical signs and symptoms, and physical examination skills.
Candidates must achieve a minimum passing score of 100 which indicates a passing score in all 10 stations. The exam is held once a year in Egypt in varying times, and fees of £1070. The exam has a limited number of positions available so the application process should be planned for early.
